Tonight I Ate Grilled Cheese

Time travel

I remember when I couldn’t wait for my legs to grow
so that they would touch the floor
of the school bus.

I remember how I knew then how the world was bigger
than I could ever be, but I wanted
to know it more.

I could not wait to grow up, to be an adult, to be in charge
of myself, my decisions, my choices,
what I ate for dinner…

But that was a long time ago, foreign to the future’s changes,
almost as if it was a different person entirely,
somewhat how our children are to us.

Now, sitting on these longer and more tired legs —
that definitely touch the ground —
I wonder.

The world is much smaller, now that the Universe is known,
yet I still want to know, everything,
to fill in this life.

Action compels me to take charge through change, I choose
sometimes on behalf of others,
but was not my littlest self
an other?
